One of my running partners, Antonio, went to the doctor today because of severe ankle pain and was told that he can't run for 4 weeks! That's a horrible thing for any runner to have to go through, but to have it happen just two weeks away from a marathon is devastating. I can't even imagine what he's going through mentally right now. It would be such a tough decision to know whether to ignore the doctor and run anyways or not. Of course, the smart choice would be to follow the orders and sit it out instead of risking a more serious long-term injury. But, emotions would make it very difficult to pick that smart choice...

I'm going to sit out my scheduled 3 mile run tomorrow. I've been running longer and faster than I was supposed to all week and am feeling a few more aches and pains than normal. Of course, I'm paranoid about every little pain now (even more so than I was before) and this definitely motivated that decision. Plus, I have the 15 miler to New Jersey and back planned for Saturday morning and it would be better to have fresh legs for that.

4 weeks! That is like a million years for a runner! Hope that he will have a good recovery though.

Sitting out right before a race is DEF NOT fun. I remember wanting to cry when it happened to me. But you know what? It actually worked out for the better ;-)

Thanks for the messages of support. I am still holding some hope (albeit slim) that I might be able to run in two weeks. I will check in with a specialist see what he tells me. Ankle, though stiff, feels much better now and can actually walk without pain. I have been swimming to keep fitness, but it isn't the same as running, is it?
